Jarvis Landry & Opendorse: Comparing Instagram and Twitter

One of the most famous athletes that the athlete marketing platform known as Opendorse has chosen to showcase on its website is none other than Jarvis Landry, wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns. Landry has nearly 400,000 followers on Twitter, and over 1.6 million followers on Instagram. As a younger NFL star, Landry’s posts do not draw in the amount of likes that many NFL athletes do, but his following on social media is still significant.

TCL seems to be Landry’s most prominent partner on social media. TCL is a television brand that does giveaway contests after each NFL Sunday, and they choose winners by having them pick between Jarvis Landry and Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon, using the hashtags #TeamLandry and #TeamMelvin. The company is clearly partnered with the athletes rather than their teams because Landry had tweeted similar posts about TCL when he was still playing for the Miami Dolphins in 2017.

Landry’s posts regarding TCL are clearly advertisements. The graphics to go along with his tweets are professionally made, and the tweets are at least partially scripted. Landry’s posts always include hashtags to draw attention to the contest, and TCL’s Twitter account is always tagged as well.

Landry’s Instagram account is active, but he does not run advertisements on the site like he does on Twitter. One would think that a television company like TCL would be eager to market themselves on a website that has such a visual element to it. TCL’s Instagram page has only a few thousand followers, but its Twitter has nearly 60,000 followers. It may be the case that Landry elected to save his Instagram for personal use only. It is also worth noting that Opendorse seems to work with athletes primarily on Twitter. Perhaps Opendorse finds that Twitter users are generally more engaged with the content they see.
